Academic Integrity

There are three fundamental aspects of academic integrity that must be adhered to in this course.  Violations of any of the three could result in a zero on the assignment and may result in a student going before the Discipline Committee.

1.  Plagiarism.

Plagiarism generally involves taking material from a published or web source and claiming that it is your own work.  Use of any material without attribution, whether intentional or not, constitutes plagiarism.  There is no reason ever to plagiarize in an ecology course.  You will be rewarded for effective research, even if this means that someone has published a perfect answer to the question that I have posed.  Simply quote the entire article directly and cite it correctly.  Note that the author of the article will be expected to meet the standards of the course, and that much published material is dated or incorrect.

2.  Falsification of data.

Deliberately changing or making up data is the most serious offense that a scientist can commit.  Violations of this have been in the news with some frequency, and have generally resulted in fines, exclusion of the sponsoring institution from receiving grant monies and the end of the career of the scientist involved.  You are expected to document your results, even if you obtain no data or the data directly contradict your hypothesis.  This does not mean that your data are wrong, only that the model you are using is incomplete.  Making up data to avoid carrying out the lab will be considered a serious violation of a major Groton School rule.

3.  Failure to contribute to a group report.

The inclusion of a name on a paper or lab report implies an equal contribution by that person to the work.  If one of the group members has not contributed to the preparation of the report, that person's name should not go on the report and he or she must see me.  Failure to follow this policy will be considered an integrity violation.  All group members are expected to understand and be able to carry out all types of analyses contained in the report.
